CHAPTER

SIXTEEN

“So what do we do next?” I asked Keaton, slipping my hand out of his grip.

“I’ll make a batch of your dad’s cure. I have all but one of the ingredients already—I didn’t know he was using deadly nightshade. But I know where it grows, so I can go out and grab some. You’ll go grab your stuff, because you’re moving in with me. I’ll tell people we’re hooking up; they already think that’s why I’m soft on you anyway,” he explained.

I wasn’t against the lie, or the moving in, but I did want to know his reasoning. “Why?”

“Why tell people we’re hooking up?” He lifted an eyebrow.

“Why will they believe you?” I clarified.

His expression told me I was insane. “Because you’re the only single woman anywhere near my age in town, and I’m doomed to be a permanent bachelor.”

Right.

There was that.

It wasn’t what I necessarily wanted to hear, but it wasn’t the worst thing he could’ve said, either.

“Why do you want me to move in, though?” I pushed for just a little more. “I’ve been fine staying with Hudson and Addie.”

“Because if anyone else in town—including them—finds out who you are, hell will break loose. And you’ll be at the center of it.”

I nodded. “Fine.”

He took a step toward the door, but I caught his arm and he stopped.

“How long have we been sleeping together? If anyone asks, we need to have our story straight.”

His head bobbed. “Today. Tell them we’ve been dancing around it up until today, and now that we’ve finally been together, you don’t want to be away from me.”

Wow, I’d sound clingy.

He must’ve seen my distaste, because his lips quirked upward. “They can’t know that I think you might be my fated mate, Kass.”

“Then we’ll tell them today was the first day we hooked up, and I’m moving in with you because I can’t stand listening to Hudson and Addie having sex anymore.”

His body stilled.

“Which is true.” I stepped past him, but this time, he stopped me with a hand on my hip.

“You forgot your coat and your boots.”

Shit.

Right.

“Thanks.” I headed back to the couch while he slipped out the front door.

“Be careful,” he called out to me as he left.
